Protecting what matters most

She fought to keep her children safe. Today, they’re starting a new chapter.

Amanda*, a young single mother of two young boys living in Brooklyn, was trapped in a physically, emotionally, and financially abusive relationship. Her partner became increasingly dependent on drugs over their years together. He wasted Amanda’s money and was frighteningly violent — strangling her in one terrifying incident.

Her first lawyer after their separation, a court-appointed attorney, let Amanda down when they offered visitation to her ex-partner, despite his demonstrated drug abuse and threats toward the children. Amanda was devastated by this, but was intimidated by her ex-partner’s aggressive attorney and had run out of money to fight back.

She came to Her Justice, where we placed her case with new representation for her family offense, custody, and visitation proceedings. With their support in court, Amanda’s abuser was finally held accountable for his violence and threats over the years. Amanda was granted a full stay-away order of protection for herself and her sons — who she was also granted sole custody of.
